65-Year-Old Man Purchases Dilapidated House and Achieves Remarkable Restoration

A German family built their own home as a means of spending quality time together. The story started in 2011 when Wolfgang and Heidi, Franziska’s parents, discovered an abandoned farmhouse. They spent three years looking for a place where they could build two tiny houses for themselves and Franziska’s grandparents, as well as a garden for Heidi. They eventually acquired the East German farmstead.

The farmhouse needed a lot of work inside, despite its attractive outside. The family chose to do the renovations themselves in order to save money. They created Heidi a kitchen by removing items they didn’t need. A 13-minute film that they produced captured the entire operation.

While the outside was mostly left alone, the interior was extensively remodeled, with new beams added for reinforcement and insulation added. Modernizing the plumbing and electrical wiring was the most difficult task.
