Couple builds a tiny house to live large in retirement

Adrienne and Dave are not your typical couple, and they have created a very original retirement plan.

They constructed a little house on wheels where they plan to live comfortably into their golden years after selling the family home to their son.

A SMALL HOME ON WHEELS

For the couple who had lived in a much larger farmhouse, downsizing to this little house, which measures around 2.5 meters in width and 7.2 meters in length, has been quite the journey.

They claim that despite the stark size difference, adjusting to life in the tiny house on wheels was simple because they are used to traveling and living out of bags, which allowed them to move in with few belongings.

Interior of a tiny house

The entire wooden framework of the little house exudes a cozy, rustic charm that greets guests as soon as they step inside.

The plan is straightforward and adheres to a pretty conventional tiny house style.

Though she claims it still doesn’t quite live up to her daughter’s expectations, Adrienne had a great time decorating the space and hopes to take her shopping a few more times.

Little House Ladder

The pair bravely chose to climb a ladder to go to the sleeping loft.

This was done to give the house a feeling of extra room, though Adrienne acknowledges that if they were to build it again, they would put steps in to make access easier.

They are currently having no problems using the ladder.

Living room in a tiny house

The living area offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and is kept simple and pleasant.

Through the huge living room window, an abandoned barn on the next farm is framed like a continually changing artwork, making it a perfect place to spend hours thinking and reflecting.

Small-scale home kitchen

Once more, the kitchen is straightforward and incredibly functional. It has plenty of counter space for food preparation, a full-size oven with grill, and a refrigerator that will be powered entirely by the house’s solar power system (which isn’t completed yet).

Adrienne even says that she has more usable room in her tiny house kitchen than she did in her previous residence.

Little House Loft

The house’s rustic charm is complemented by the cozy sleeping loft located upstairs. In order to give additional headroom, the mattress, which is currently on a traditional frame, will probably be replaced with a futon in the future.

Still, the small loft fulfills its function as a cozy haven where one can spend the night.

SMALL HOUSE THE FARM

The couple bought the farm five years ago, where the house is situated. Their son purchased their old house along with half of the twenty-acre land. Adrienne and Dave still possess the other half of the title to their modest house.

This keeps them near to their family while releasing some capital for retirement.

Small House

Everybody has a distinct idea of what the ideal retirement looks like. To some, it means savoring every material possession earned over a lifetime of labor. For others, like Dave and Adrienne, it’s about making room for the things that really count in life—including family, hobbies, travel, and experiences—by downsizing and simplifying.

As for me, I can’t think of a better method.
