The Fascinating Journey of the Kitchen Mixer

An interesting history begins in the middle of the nineteenth century with the kitchen mixer, an essential appliance for any kitchen.

Beginning in 1856 with Ralph Collier’s invented mixer with rotating elements, E.P. Griffith introduced the whisk, and in 1857 the Monroe brothers introduced the hand-turned rotary egg beater. These innovations continued throughout the nineteenth century.

The “Dover beater” became famous after the Dover Stamping Company bought out the patent owned by the Monroe brothers. Rufus Eastman invented the first electric mixer in 1885, but the commercial mixers produced by the Hobart Manufacturing Company in 1914 were the game-changers.

In the 1920s, popular brands such as Sunbeam Mixmaster and Hobart KitchenAid were indispensable in many households. Herbert Johnston saw a baker mixing bread dough in 1908 and was inspired to construct a mechanical version of the tool. This led to the creation of the stand mixer.

Home kitchens were transformed when Hobart debuted the Kitchen Aid Food Preparer in 1919. The ever-improving mixer is a symbol of modern innovation and the drive for greater kitchen efficiency.
