Stop cooking rice with just water: enhance your dish with rich flavor and aromatic depth using this restaurant-inspired method.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups of white rice

  • 4 cups of rich broth (beef, vegetable, or chicken)

  • 2 tablespoons of butter or oil

  • 1 cup of aromatics (onions, garlic, or shallots)

  • 1 teaspoon of spices (for example, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise)

  • 1 tablespoon of herbs (for example, thyme, rosemary, bay leaves)

    Instructions

    1. Prepare the ingredients

    • Measure and prepare all the ingredients: rice, broth, butter/oil, aromatics, spices and herbs.

    2. Use broth instead of water

    • Replace the water with   rich broth   to improve the flavor and aroma.

    3. Toast the rice

    • In a large pot, toast the rice with butter or oil over medium heat until lightly golden.

    4. Add aromatics and spices

    • Sauté the herbs with the rice until they are soft and fragrant.

    • Add the spices and herbs, stirring to coat the rice evenly.

    5. Add the broth

    • Pour in the broth (2 cups for every cup of rice). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer.

    • Cover and cook until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.

    6. Rest

    • Remove from heat and let the rice rest covered for   10 minutes   to finish steaming.

    7. Fluff and serve

    • Gently stir with a fork to separate the grains.
